We have a shaggy looking little flower out front that looks much like it came out of a Dr. Seuss book.

Another Busy Month Past

Our hydrandrea's are in full bloom now, with their beautiful flowering heads shaped like great colorful snowballs.

Pleasant reminders of the not so distant past when there was a blanket of snow covering them.

WOW! The month of May was busy.

Our website provider (StoresOnline) had recently made some positive changes to their website builder, and updating our website to reflect the changes turned into quite a job.

But it is "finished," and we are very happy with the final result (a website is never "finished," but ever evolving).

With much the same appearance as before, it has a familiar look, but with a much more efficient operating system.

So with much to share and many new products and ideas in the works, we look forward to keeping you posted on "Our Blog."

She will take you on a guided tour, if you will, through the planting process, crop management, harvesting, distillation, and marketing of this remarkable plant.

The knowledge from this new information Christiane Meunier gives you will bring a whole new perspective to the rest of the book. Sometimes knowing "why" will give a deeper meaning to the picture presented before you.

This book is a smaller version of the 1996 version, which had 164 pages and was roughly 10 inches tall by 10 inches wide. The new edition (2004) has 128 pages and is approximately 8 inches tall by 10½ inches wide (7 7/8 inches tall x 10 5/8 inches wide to be more precise :-). So the new edition, with a beautiful cover in shades of deep blue and green, will fit handsomely on your library shelf.

Old Salem, North Carolina

This past autumn, we had the treat of being able to visit Old Salem in Winston Salem, North Carolina.

It was an enjoyable walk into our nations past, seeing how things were for the early Americans a couple hundred years ago.

We began our day at the Old Salem Visitor Center. Here we found a comfortable gift shop, along with many exhibits.

But we had come to see the old side of our country, so we made our way through, and crossed Old Salem Road through the Covered Bridge, which was really quite impressive in and of itself.

We only stopped at the Frank L. Horton Museum Center long enough to take a few pictures of the flowers and bench in front. The museum’s great expanse of red brick posed a striking backdrop for the bright flowers.

From there we strolled down Main Street, pausing to take an occasional picture. We had not purchased the "Old Salem Ticket," so could not go into many of the different shops. But we were content to take in the sights from outside, which were more than enough for one day.

The trees were just beginning to change color, and their leaves had just begun to fall, which only added to the scenic beauty of Old Salem.

The gardens had the full autumn harvest look, which combined nicely with the autumn foliage of the trees. And the weather was perfect :-).

A most enjoyable part of the day was the C. Winkler Bakery. Walking in, the wonderful smell of fresh baked bread welcomed us, and we were presented with a sample, straight from the old wood-fired oven. The bread practically melted in our mouths.

The store part of the bakery was quite small, and took only a few minutes to walk through. On our way out though, we had to stop a purchase two loaves of bread: One was rose marie & garlic, and the other had a cinnamon crust.

We may just have to make an annual pilgrimage to Old Salem if for no other reason than the bread :-).

	The camellia tree in our yard seems to come alive in the spring time with big vibrant red blooms. There literally seems to be thousands of the large round blossoms (a bit of an exaggeration, but there are a lot). And if you can catch them with the early morning dew still on them, or just after a refreshing rain shower, the water droplets add a certain charm to the velvety red petals. The vibrant red color of the camellia flowers is very reminiscent of our bright Raspberry colored Linen Lavender Sachet from our Claire Collection. Cape Henry Lighthouses

Recently we went to Ft. Story to visit the Cape Henry Lighthouses.

Just getting onto Ft. Story was an experience, with all the security measures they have to take now. It’s a necessary evil, one would suppose.

It was a beautiful day, and the lighthouses were great. We took pictures up close, and then walked down to the beach later, and took some from a distance.

There is a small gift shop at the base of the hill where you find the entrance to the original lighthouse. It is interesting, how that, after you have purchased your tickets, you are directed to a door with a sign on it that says, “The Climb Starts Here!” They were right! Going through the door, you are immediately faced with the side of the hill that the lighthouse sits on, with a long flight of steps going up.

It is sad how the general public has to leave their mark on everything. Every pane of glass in the tower was etched with names and such.

Looking past that though, you have a great view of the other “newer” lighthouse (built in 1887), and the Coast Guard compound that surrounds it.

On the beach, we saw many holes in the sand, and were wondering about them till we spotted a little crab dart in and out of one. They were very quick, but our camera was quicker
:-).

As we wandered around, we kept running into a pleasant couple (who turned out to be from Ohio). It’s amazing how you can plan a trip or vacation, and visit all the sights, yet live in an area for so long, and just never get out to see the local attractions.

But we finally made it.

All in all, it was an excellent little venture, from the lighthouses to the beach, with many photo opportunities.

Incidentally, we were not expecting the beach walk, and so were not quite prepared for that. With a slight cloudy day, and a nice breeze, it seemed okay. But after getting home, we realized how much sun we really did get.

But we had the perfect solution. The Soothing Aloe Vera Lotion was just the thing we needed.

When Simple Scents named the Aloe Vera Lotion as “Soothing,” they knew what they were talking about. Applying the Aloe Vera Lotion was instant relief. It was later when we realized it had even taken the sting of the sunburn away.

Our Christmas Light Pictures

Last Christmas, we took some time to not just go looking at Christmas lights, but to actually go picture hunting for great Christmas light displays.

We were able to find some great pictures around town.

As always, we thoughly enjoyed our visit to the Norfolk Botanical Gardens, where they always have a dazzling Christmas Garden of Lights display, as over a million bulbs bloom at the same time.

The fire breathing dragon at the Norfolk Botanical Gardens was quite impressive

All the busy elves gave the woods quite an enchanted feel.

With a limited budget, this was a wonderful way to enjoy the season, while at the same time capturing some of the beauty and creativity of our local citizens.

It was interesting though, as it grew evident that we were not the only ones on a limited budget. The Christmas lights in general did not appear as spectacular as they had in past years.

Even in the more affluent neighbothoods, the Christmas decorations seemed to have been affected by the cutbacks.

We were able to find some great pictures though.

One of the strip malls on Virginia Beach Blvd near the main library had a surprisingly unique Christmas display, to include this beautiful unicorn.

Who knew this was how Santa got around on his off time?.

We happened upon this house in Virginia Beach where the Christmas cheer was alive and well. Against a darkly lit neighborhood it really stood out.

We sold these lavender sachets originally, but when we first opened our web store, for one reason or another, we never did put these particular sachets on.

But as they give LittleFrenchBoutique.com such a great French “FEEL”, we kept them on as one of our banner pictures.

Being 5 1/2” wide by 8 1/2” tall (the size of a standard sheet of typing paper folder in half) with 32 pages, Patti Barrett provides you with the perfect pocket resource guide to all your lavender needs.

After a brief yet thorough introduction of lavender, Patti Barrett then introduces you to the different types of lavender. From the hardy varieties to the more tender of the family, even a couple others that are not necessarily as common, but are worth mentioning just the same.

Without wasting any words, Patti Barrett systematically guides you through the planting process, complete with illustrations, whether you want to start your lavender from seeds, from cuttings, or by using the layering method.

Once your lavender plants have been started, she will help you with where to plant your lavender, and how to prepare the soil. If it is your wish to keep your lavender in containers, she provides information on which lavenders will do well that way, and how to take care of them.

Patti Barrett will also explain the pruning process for you, along with different harvesting methods and tips, and how to maintain a healthy plant.

	Dogwood Fall Colors The autumn curtain has officially fallen here in the commonwealth of Virginia. One of the first flowers to bloom in the spring is the dogwood, and it is also one of the first trees to turn colors in the fall. It's always neat to see how the dogwood's branches and leaves grow in layers, so that a lot of times the changing colors will be in layers also. As the brightly colored leaves begin to fall from the dogwood trees, we are left with another colorful surprise, the dogwood berries. And though not edible per say for human consumption, these bright red berries are a welcome sight, especially for the birds and squirrels. Another interesting thing about the dogwood is how the little green berry pods stick up above the layers of leaves and branches, like a thousand little raised hands, each trying to get your attention. Of course, with the changing of the leaves comes the long awaited cooler weather. And with the cooler weather comes a very busy holiday season right at its heels :-). Daphne Flowers

There is a Daphne bush just outside our front door, and my oh my, it has finally opened up in full bloom.

Last year there didn't seem to be as many blooms on it.

The Genus Lavendula

A great word to use when describing this book is "Comprehensive."

Whether you are a novice or an "old hand" at dealing with lavender, you will find this book very educational. Not only is The Genus Lavendula informative, but it has an entertaining quality about it as well, in the form of the many photographs and illustrations. As you open this book, attention to detail soon becomes apparent, as it seems that every aspect of lavender has been covered, from the well written descriptions, to the beautifully painted color plates, even to the ensuring that proper hues of lavender are represented in the photographs.

If you are just beginning your quest for information regarding The Genus Lavendula (lavender :-), then you may wish to have a good dictionary on hand as you peruse this book.

The Genus Lavendula begins with an interesting history of lavender, especially from the perspective of its cultivation in different countries down through the centuries.

Before Tim Upson and Susyn Andrews get into the actual business of classification though, you are given a short yet very useful "handbook" on the cultivation of lavender. Specified here are the three things necessary that make for healthy lavender with long life. From there, three methods of propagation are discussed, and of the three, which is the most popular and reliable. And even though lavender can act as a repellant to many insects, they do have their own pests and diseases to contend with, both indoor and out.

Of course, prior to a detailed classification listing of lavender, a short summary of its general appearance would be in order. So the basic characteristics that are demonstrated throughout the lavender family are given.

On the more technical scientific side of lavender, you are presented with a brief yet thorough synopsis of the production of essential lavender oil, with some of its other commercial uses. If you are interested in the actual chemistry of lavender, this section delves into its phytochemistry, from its metabolites to its chromosome numbers.

The importance of pollination is also touched on, both from the viewpoint of the lavender and from its pollinators, which would include the especially important honey bee, but is not limited to just that.

Finally, the main body of the book is given to the actual classification or "taxonomic treatment" of lavender. Included with the names of the lavender cultivars are detailed descriptions, which include measurements of peduncle (flower stalk) length, leaf and spike size, with the size and color of the calyx and corolla, the flowering period, where they can be found, habitat, and conservation status. This is in addition to any other information and/or chart, picture, map or graph that may be beneficial to the description.

It is interesting to note, much to the credit of Tim Upson and Susyn Andrews, that in their introduction to the book and in the introduction to the "Taxonomic Treatment of Lavandula," they clearly state that there are areas of uncertainty in the book, where the "readers may be able to help fill gaps, " and that they offer this work to "promote and encourage further interest and work on Lavandula."

We recently had the opportunity to visit the North Carolina Zoo.

We had recently shared with you our trip to the North Carolina Zoo not too long ago.

Though we only covered half of the zoo, seeing just the African Continent side, the animals were amazing.

So in our first photo gallery of the North Carolina Zoo, you saw some glimpses of the animals as we saw them.

But the North Carolina Zoo had some other surprises to offer.

Such as all the beautiful flowers and plants scattered along the way.

Some were indigenous to the local area, but most were representative of other places. And even more specifically, they helped to characterize where the animals were from.

Also, scattered throughout the North Carolina Zoo were a collection of amazing bronze statues.

But these statues were not "just" statues as we normally think of statues, of figures striking a pose, standing in rigid attention. No, these were bronze statues of various animals and creatures, seemingly suspended in time as they went about their normal activities.

How the artists were able to capture the motion of their subjects is amazing.

These bronze figures, together with the beauty of the plants and flowers, made an already enjoyable day even more enjoyable.

We went to the Virginia First Landing State Park.

If you enjoy nature, it is an amazing place.

A good coat of insect repellent made the excursion much more enjoyable.

It was a beautiful day, and the scenery was gorgeous.

For the most part, the trail was marked by paint marks on trees scattered along the trails, and they were quite effective.

We followed the Long Creek Trail, pretty much until we came to the end of Long Creek, where its mouth opened up into Broad Bay. The view was fantastic.

As usual, we were hunting for photo opportunities, and we were not disappointed.

They had a sign up with some great advice:

Take nothing but pictures,
Leave nothing but footprints.

It seemed like we left plenty of footprints, but we were rewarded with some wonderful pictures

We met a turtle on the path, and got a great shot of it before it plodded back into the woods. It did not like the flash on the camera.

There was a papa cardinal along the path at one point, with his striking red coat, but he would not sit still long enough to get a good picture of him between the trees and branches. He would sit just long enough to tease you into thinking you could get the shot. Mama cardinal was not far away, and he seemed to be playing decoy :-).

It felt like we had walked forever through the woods, and decided we had better be getting back. It’s funny, because when we finally got home, we Googled the park in satellite view, and we really had not gone very far at all. We definitely have a lot more to explore out there. Something to look forward to.

GBHS Fall Craft Show Success

We had a wonderful time at the Great Bridge HS Fall Craft Extravaganza.

This was our first time there, and all the folks and volunteers at the school were great! It is very obvious that they put much effort into the event to make it such a success. We certainly do thank them.

It's always fun to be surrounded by other crafters and vendors, "sharing" inbetween visits with folks as they come by the table.

As well as folks sampling and purchasing products, we were able to hand out many LittleFrenchBoutique.com business cards, letting folks know about our lavender boutique.

Many people on the East Coast who were "Dreaming of a white Christmas" had their dreams come true this year.

Wild Red Columbine

In our flower bed out front, we have some Wild Red Columbines growing, probably compliments of a bird passing by once upon a time :-).

And being as how they are perennials, they just keep coming back season after season. This is not a bad thing, since they are cute little flowers with their bell-like shapes.

They are also known as Little Lanterns with their bright little lights (stamens) dangling below.

To the scientific world they would be known as Aquilegia Canadensis.

We have come across a little gem which was tucked away in the back of another older book about lavender.

This book is simply entitled: "Lavender."

It is actually more of a booklet, being the size of standard typing paper folded in half. But with only 24 pages (not including the cover), this little book is packed with information.

One of the interesting things about this book is that it is copyrighted in 1960. With that in mind, you are given a snapshot of what the lavender market was like back in those days, and how far lavender had spread up to that time.

So when compared to the information of today, it makes a somewhat interesting read.

Of course, Edna Neugebauer was one of the lavender experts of her day, and what she has to say has the weight of authority behind it.

After a brief introduction of lavender, she makes it clear that …

“The explanations which follow are intended for the amateur or home gardener, who is growing a few plants in a home-sized garden, not for the commercial production either of plants or flowers.”She begins by devoting quite a few pages to the history of lavender, even as to how it might be mentioned in the New Testament. You are taken through the Middle Ages and Renaissance, with quotes and information, right up to more recent times, from around the world to our own country.

After some familiarity with lavender and where it comes from, Edna Neugebauer gets right to the business of growing lavender, explaining four (4) different ways to propagate this plant …

Seed Cuttings Layering Division When the new plants are ready, why it is important for you to find a good garden spot for them, and where to plant them in your garden are covered in the Cultivation section.

When and How to Harvest are given next.

Then we come to the Uses of lavender.

Early medicinal uses Commercial importance of oil Honey The personal use of the fragrance in things such as pot-pourris and sachets Using the beauty of the plant itself The last and largest section of the book is devoted to the different Species and Varieties, complete with scientific names and their descriptions, divided into five (5) sections

We recently had the opportunity to visit the North Carolina Zoo.

We were blessed with a beautiful day; not too hot, not too cool, with plenty of sunshine.

And with the exception of the lions (who were sleeping contentedly in the grass), all of the animals seemed to be out and about, enjoying the day as well.

The North Carolina Zoo is divided into two main parts or regions

North American Continent
African Continent

Since we were taking our time to enjoy what the North Carolina Zoo has to offer, we only visited the African region of the zoo, along with the “hot and humid” Forest Aviary :-).

We will definitely have to go back to finish the tour.

The North Carolina Zoo is undeniably one of North Carolina’s main attractions, and is definitely worth the visit, regardless of who you are with.

And just as you would expect, the animals at the North Carolina Zoo are amazing.

Some of the animals we saw …

The black and white striped Zebra
The Giraffe – tallest of all living land animals, with its long neck and legs
The Ostrich – largest living bird. The ostrich makes up for not being able to fly with powerful legs, being able to run up to 40 miles per hour
The African Elephant – largest of all land mammals with their large ears and long trunks
Southern White Rhinoceros – agile giants with dual horns
Hamadryas Baboon – protective, social creatures
Western Lowland Gorilla – this docile great ape, largest of the living primates
Chimpanzees - intelligent primates with a complex social structure
The large African Lion - highly social cats

Give yourself plenty of time to soak in all the sights and the signs and plaques (which are loaded with information) as you enjoy the animals with your family and friends at the North Carolina Zoo!

January Snow

Sunny Virginia Beach in January

January ended on a cold note here in Virginia Beach. It started snowing on the evening of the 29th, and didn't stop till late on the 30th. When we woke up on the 31st (Sunday), there was a nice thick blanket of snow covering everything :-).

And on Sunday afternoon, we were able to get out and about for a bit, to take a few pictures.

We made it down to a sunny warm cold Sandbridge Beach. The snow covered sand dunes were quite impressive.

It was interesting to see that there was a layer of snow on top of the sand, and then a layer of sand covering the snow. So in many places, the ground was covered with snow, but you would never know it, till your foot sank through the sand and snow.

All in all, the snow made for a great end to January in a place that rarely gets to witness such a dazzling show of nature.

Johnny Jump-up	Our yard is full of Johnny Jump-ups They grow like weeds :-). All through the grass, in the flower beds, even a couple in the cracks of the side walk. The tiny little Johnny Jump-ups are a welcome sight. They are such tiny delicate looking flowers, and look like little minature pansys And what makes ours so unique is their color. Most Johnny Jump-ups it would seem are a deep purple violet color with a yellow center. Ours have a rich lavender hue, which just happens to be a perfect comliment to LittleFrenchBoutique.com, with all the lavender colors for our lavender theme. Of course, even with their lavender color, the Johnny Jump-ups do not have that wonderful lavender fragrance. But since we have plenty of fragrant lavender buds, that is not an issue. Down through time, lavender has been known by many for its aromatic fragrance and decorative beauty. With the combination of these two qualities, it is no wonder that lavender is such an irresistible force in our marketplace.

But lavender holds many more secrets than just its sweet smell or attractive appeal.

Secrets that when opened, can make an effect on our usual everyday existence, our health, and even our cooking habits.

Philippa Waring makes it very clear at the onset of this book that it is in the best interest of the reader to consult a “qualified” physician in health related issues, and that even though the contents of the book have been carefully documented and researched, you are at your own risk when practicing any of the remedies contained herein.

The list supplied seems to have been written with the English climate and conditions in mind, but it offers some good detail none the less.

Among a few of the other changes we are making here at LittleFrenchBoutique.com is the type of lavender that we use.

We have been using a Grosso lavender, which has a distinct BOLD fragrance.

But now we will be filling our sachets with the Lavandula Angustifolia type of lavender, which has its own distinct fragrance :-).

While not so bold, this lavender has a calmer, sweeter fragrance.

Corn is an amazing grain.

Within the mature cornfield, you can almost get lost, finding yourself in maze upon maze as you try to find where you are within the forest of corn stalks.

Each ear of corn is topped off with velvety silk, and each stalk is topped off with its own tassel.

And as you pull back the husk, the maize color is revealed. And even more so, you see the color in the corn when it is dried and ground into meal.

Corn has become such a part of our American culture.

This book about lavender is not your usual book about lavender.

Tessa Evelegh, in her desire to pass along to us the fascinating beauty and rich aromatic fragrance of this magical plant, has very well succeeded with the ideas and projects that she introduces.

The book itself is beautiful. It is hard bound, with a front cover in light lavender hues having a few sprigs of lavender that sweep into focus, the lavender heads being on the bottom half of the page. The back cover is of a darker lavender shade, with a few pictures that give a glimpse into what lies ahead. Many hard bound books are somewhat plain, with a nice looking paper book cover to spruce it up. Tessa Evelegh has gone a step further, and the same look of the paper book cover is printed onto her actual book. The book is a square 9¼ inches high by 10 inches wide, with 128 colorful pictures, and contains a handy index.

With that all being said, Tessa Evelegh's book about lavender would be a handsome addition to anybody's library.

As you flip through the book, you will be impressed by the rich photography of Debbie Patterson. The pictures of the particular projects are great, and her full page picture spreads are warm and rich, full of color, and very inviting. In each picture, it seems that you have to stop and take a minute to soak in all the eye-catching detail.

Since a little knowledge of lavender's basic story is helpful in producing lavender creations, Tessa Evelegh begins the book with a chapter about its history, to include some of the fascinating folklore surrounding lavender down through the centuries. She even includes some of the benefits of lavender in this chapter, with some simple everyday aromatherapy uses (used at your own discretion of course).

Naturally, to do your own lavender projects, it helps to grow your own lavender. In the next chapter, Tessa Evelegh explains the cultivation process in some detail, covering a number of different types, how soil and climate affects them, growing the lavenders, where to plant them in your garden, and how to harvest them.

Having those two bits of information tucked behind your belt, so to speak, it is finally time to start the projects.

And what better way to get this started than with the use of linens, from sachets to lavender "bottles" to linen bags. Then you can't forget the beauty of the lavender itself, so you will find great ideas on wreath making, garlands, and other elegant displays. And since you don't want to hide that wonderful lavender fragrance, Tessa Evelegh supplies you with a myriad of ways to enjoy that rich aroma. Potpourri, lavender water, soap and oven mitts are just to name a few.

She finishes the book off with some "delicious" ways to enjoy lavender. And if the recipes aren't enough to make your mouth water, Debbie Patterson's scrumptious pictures that compliment the recipes will.

March Maddness

There is definitely a certain maddness about March. An undefinable insanity if you will.

And we are not necessarily referring to basketball either, although that would definitely qualify.

Everything is "crazy" in the month of March.

For starters, there is the "Spring Ahead" time change where we lose an hour of sleep.

Is it Spring? Or is it still Winter. From day to day it is hard to know. Even the poor little daffodils stay confused about that.

What do I wear today? Do I dress warm or cold? Of course the weather guys are having just as hard a time with this as we are :-).

St. Patrick's Day is in March

Big Snow in Virginia Beach

We understand that Virginia Beach is not in the tropics, and that it does get cold during the winter, and that occasionally we do get snow.

Not far from Virginia Beach, the early settlers in Jamestown had made that mistake. They thought that it would stay reasonably warm in this climate. With the hind sight of history, we can see that it cost them dearly as they endured their first winter here.

Yes, we understand an "occasional" snow. But a heavy snow that completely blankets everything, with all of its beauty and danger, is something we don’t often witness in this area.

And naturally, everything shuts down, simply from a safety standpoint.

So with such a "pristine" environment surrounding us, we set out to capture some of its undisturbed beauty.

The rolling knolls of a golf course, folks sledding on the bank of an overpass, and the trees of a city park wrapped in snow, were scenes from a seemingly different place.

In Virginia Beach, our courthouse municipal center has been set off by its self way out in the countryside. And since the architecture is in keeping with the old colonial style from long ago, we thought that it would give us some picturesque photos. We were right.

Then driving deeper into the countryside along Princess Anne Road, we were rewarded with more beautiful pictures of a rare, snow covered farming community.

Out in Pungo, from the top of the high rise bridge that spans the marshland of the North Landing River, we found a breathtaking panoramic view worth taking. Of course, it may have been the icy cold wind blowing over the top of the bridge that took our breath away, but it was spectacular none the less.

Getting back to civilization, our two new "towers" in the Virginia Beach town center provided us with a couple great shots from a snowy perspective.

Even a large manmade lake encircled by Independence Parkway in Chesapeake proved worth the visit for our camera. The ice and snow provided a cold yet charming backdrop to the local residents of the lake. Mallards, Canadian geese, seagulls, and even the great blue herons did not "seem" too set back by the elements.

And mountains of snow in our parking lots? Now that’s unusual!

Purely as a matter of perspective, one of the nice things about the Tidewater area, especially as it pertains to Virginia Beach, is that the snow is short lived. The heavy snow from Sunday had disappeared by Thursday for all practical purposes.

And we are left with only the memory of our snowy fair city.

Mini Apple Oat Muffins Recipe With the Holiday Season fast approaching, we wanted to share a heathly "munchy" alternative, for when you want a snack, but you don't necessarily want all that sugar, but you are in the mood for something sweet and nutty. Being full of fiber, these Mini Apple Oat Muffins are good for you, and they taste wonderful. Bake a batch or two for your family when you get together, and you'll be amazed at how quickly the Mini Apple Oat Muffins dissappear :-).

MINI APPLE OAT MUFFIN (*1 POINT)
3/4 cup + 2 tbsp oats (3) 1 cup buttermilk or 1% milk (2) 1-1/4 cup whole wheat flour or whole grain (1) 4 Tbsp milled flax seeds (4) 1-1/2 tsp baking powder 1/2 tsp baking soda 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon 1/4 tsp salt	1/4 cups chopped walnuts (5) 1 medium chopped Gala apple (2) 3 Tbsp canola oil (10.5) 3 Tbsp water 1 egg beaten (2) 1/3 cup brown sugar substitute or Splenda 4 tsp vanilla
In small bowl combine 3/4 cup oats & buttermilk and let soak for 30 min. Combine flour, flax seed, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, salt & walnuts. Stir together oil, egg, sugar substitute, and vanilla, blend well. Add chopped apple. Stir in the wet mixture the oat mixture, stir in the flour mix (don’t over mix. If mixture is to dry add just a little buttermilk to wet). Fill muffin cups 1/3 full and sprinkle the 2 tbsp oats over muffins. Bake in mini muffin cup pan at 425 for 11-15 minutes. Mom and Dad's Love of Nature

Growing up I was always very drawn to nature and growing things.

I suppose I inherited my green thumb from both of my parents.

Mom loved to grow flowers, potting them and reselling them. Dad’s love for growing trees and plants showed in everything he touched. And this love for nature and plants followed him all his life.

As a young man, he studied horticulture and made that his life work. He was always working on growing trees by planting cuttings, and working with them. Even better, by grafting branches into trees, he would come up with some very interesting ideas.

While we were still living in France, I can remember how he had grafted this cherry tree in the backyard of our family home, with three different kinds of cherries:

red
dark red
and yellow.

I am sure that the people who moved into our house after we moved to the states must have looked at this tree and thought … "Wow, I didn’t know they had cherry trees growing like that!!!" I do hope that they enjoyed its fruits every season. One of my dad’s wonderful gifts.

He also grew this edge of fruit trees along the property line. He said it would produce a beautiful edge and would even bear fruit to eat.

I have since read that the practice of growing trees in this way is very common in France. The Kings had adopted this into their well manicured gardens, to not only look great, but to conserve on space.

The "not so noble people" would also use this way of growing trees in their smaller gardens.

Dad would tell me every step of the process. He would spend countless hours watching as the trees grew, all the while shaping them along the way. In the end you could see how this wonderful way of shaping the trees can bring fruit within easy reach, while keeping a beautiful, natural edge to your gardens.

Dad has been struggling with Alzheimer’s several years now, but his love of nature and plants will forever remain in my memory and my heart.

Today, September 21st, is a day of remembrance for those affected with the Alzheimer’s disease and its effects all around the world.

I just want to remember Mom and Dad, their love of nature and plants, and how they touched my life throughout the years.

So next time you find yourself enjoying the plants growing around you, or even perhaps the plants you may be growing yourself, take a minute to enjoy the moment of God’s beautiful creation through all of us!!!!

NC Jasmine

North Carolina Jasmine.

This weekend we went to the Norfolk Botanical Gardens to see if we could get some pictures of the azalea's that are in full bloom right now. Hopefully, we will have those pictures in a gallery before to long :-).

As we walked through the gardens though, we noticed a very familiar fragrance long before we ever saw it's souce.

It was the unmistakable aroma of the North Carolina Jasmine.

It took us a few minutes to find the Jasmine, which was entwined all through the azaleas.

We have a NEW LOOK at LittleFrenchBoutique.com

After a lot of hard work and what seems like an eternity, we have finally finished expanding our website.

And when we say "Expanding," we mean literally.

We loved the look and feel of the web site as it was, but we were running into issues with space on our pages, especially the home page.

So we finally broke down and widened the website.

These little Pinkladies, as they are sometimes called, are hardy little plants. So much so that you have to be careful that they don't over run your garden. A little thinning from time to time keeps them in check pretty well. And they are worth the effort. The pollen will sometimes get so thick inside the flower that if you get your nose too close while smelling them, it may leave a yellow smug on your nose. Just like yellow butter :-). So they are known as Pink Buttercups also. You may find them with the perennials at the local nursery under their more formal name - OENOTHERA SPECIOSA.

What a refreshing way to portray lavender.

Though this book is no longer in print, and may be considered a relic by some (being printed in the early 90’s), if you can come in possession of one, this is a read that is certainly worth your time and effort.

Pamela Allardice begins her book not so much with the “history” of lavender, but more the story behind it. As she so eloquently puts it, it’s about the lavender “lore,” taken from “a host of legends and fairy tales.”

From this journey through lavender’s memoirs, Pamela Allardice gives us an account of how lavender and love have become connected. She provides many antidotes of how lavender would be used by the young maidens to ensure their young men falling in love with them. But not just the maidens, but other uses as well, such as keeping your lover faithful as he journeyed by land or sea.

It would only follow, that with all the benefits of lavender, from its fragrance and beauty, to how the butterflies and bees love it (and how the other insects turn their noses up to it), the lavender should definitely be in our gardens.

So some of the issues Pamela Allardice discusses are …

• what kind of lavender to get
• how to start and grow lavender
• and even where to put lavender in the garden

Of course this is along with how harvest and prepare lavender for use.

Now that you have all this lavender, what do you do with it?

Well, how about lavender cuisine for starters. This was once very widespread. From spices, to spreads, to decorations, and everything in between, lavender can be a “delightful” compliment to your dining experience.

Pamela Allardice then gives some excellent tips on gathering and preparing the lavender flowers, and then provides you with some wonderful lavender recipes to experiment with.

With a content pallet, how else can lavender be used for “Milady?”

From such a rich oil and fragrance, lavender has many effective uses for a body according to Pamela Allardice. Mouthwash, skin tonic, soap, balms, moisturizing creams, and hair rinse are just to name a few. And she gives you all this complete with the ingredients to put these lavender remedies together.

And speaking of remedies, she also delves into the medicine chest, providing many natural lavender treatments for different ailments. Of course, your discretion is needed as you explore these unusual prescriptions.

In the end, Pamela Allardice concludes this book of lavender by giving us different uses of lavender around the house. With its fragrance and beauty, lavender offers many ways in which you can keep the atmosphere fresh and fragrant. She will show you the secrets of lavender potpourri, along with many other ideas, such as lavender in candles, sachets, pillows and toys.

Pamela Allardice makes all this information available so that you can “share your enjoyment of this lovely and useful plant” with your friends and family.

What a wonderful book!

The Maui Book of Lavender begins with a charming history of lavender. From it first “documented” use in Rome, its spread through Europe, and its many uses down through the ages, and how it has affected history. The story of lavender is followed to America, and then ultimately to the Islands, where the real story of the Maui Book of Lavender begins.

Here we find Alii Chang’s passion. And not just his passion, but how it came to be, with such influences in his life as his grandmother, the farm, and all the work he put into it. Our Home in France

Our Home in France

Have you ever looked into a picture, heard a song, or smelled something familiar, and suddenly you were transported back in your mind to a familiar place or time in your life?

I would love to share a simple picture that always takes me back to a very faraway place. In fact, it carries me all the way to the place where I grew up as a small child.

This is a picture of a very modest house, with stone walls. The house sat right up against the cobblestones of the main street, which runs through a very small town that is South East of Paris, France.

The streets have been paved now.
You can still see the outline of
the "old door" above the front door.

This house had a wooden front door with a window in it, and to the right of the door was a French style window complete with shutters, with another window above the door.

The window above the front door wasn’t always a window. Oddly enough, it was a door that opened up to nowhere. In the OLD days, it was a loft with "easy" access. But as children, we would open the door and sit on the edge with our feet dangling out. It was fun to just sit there watching everything that was going on outside.

Of course, our mom would tell us to close the door, and get back in before one of us would fall and get hurt! But you know how kids are. We were fearless.

This was a one bedroom house before mom and dad added a second floor. That gave us two more bedrooms. The middle room upstairs was essentially a small room used for laundry, where an ironing board could be set up and where the clothes could be folded. This room had only two small little windows to bring in sunlight. It was "VERY" cozy.

When grandma moved in with us, it became my brother’s bedroom. Since the room was so small, we would tease him because he had to sleep with his door open so that his legs could stretch out with his feet sticking out the door. He didn’t think it was so funny :-).

Sadly enough, the house has recently been demolished, with new construction being built in its place. As always though, the memories of it with my family will live on.

Our New Christmas Video Clip

We are very excited about our new little lavender sachet video clip.

It started out with the idea of “How can we show our sachets in a way as to show our customers depth in the pictures.”.

We feel that our product pictures are good, but being one dimensional, you don't quite get the feel of the sachets that we wanted to project.

For instance, the fact that we FILL our sachets with lavender buds can really be seen as the sachet turns and moves about in the video.

But we didn't just want to have a “Product Video”. We wanted to show our sachets in movement in an interesting way.

And we have come up with a few good ideas as to what to do with the sachets at Christmas time. Ideas of how to use them enhancing gifts, of them being stocking stuffers, gifts to pass out, etc.

That's how the idea of a little stop motion video clip was born.

Why not take the sachets, and let them show us what the ideas are. That way the ideas are presented in an interesting way that is very unique, while at the same time, show casing the look and feel (depth) of the sachets.

We must say that we are very pleased with the outcome.

And with many more ideas to get out, hopefully there will be many more little “episodes” to come.

So stay tuned, as more is sure to come :-).

RSS is a wonderful way to keep up with the news and products

We have been using them to keep track of what is going on at church and with websites of our friends and other sites we use regularly.

And as the name implies (Really Simple Syndication), RSS is truly very simple to use.

The website you are interested in does have to offer RSS in order for you to use it, and you will have to subscribe to it to enjoy it's benefits.

	It was fun to see our Paperwhites pop up this Spring. The lily white little flowers in big clusters are so fragrant. Just one more of Spring's gentle surprises. To see the Paperwhites spring up out of the ground naturally always kind of makes you wonder that they are so often thought of as "Christmas" flowers, being grown indoors, and "forced" to bloom for Christmas. It doesn't matter, Spring or Christmas, they are a joy at either time. And Christmas is going to be here before you know it :-). With pink petals that are "almost" violet, the red center of this rose of sharon flower completes the illusion of the violet color.

Open bright and early, the bees have already begun their busy day.

Bees are not the only ones who enjoy these beautiful flowers with us. There are also the japanese beetles to contend with. Red Flower Carpet Rose

Fragrant Red Roses

These red roses "appear" to be red flower carpet roses, with their rich red petals around golden yellow stamens.

However, it seems to be the general consensus that the red flower carpet rose has very little if any fragrance to it.

Our simple red roses are packed with a wonderful sweet fragrance though … almost bordering on a fruity smell (a little like a raspberry maybe?).

This book is definitely for the serious lavender grower, as Virginia McNaughton sets out in great detail the entire range of lavender cultivars.

In writing this book, her desire was to give a descriptive listing of “some” of the lavender cultivars, and with such a large range within the lavandula genus, it would seem that she succeeded. Her list is quite impressive.

So no matter what you are looking for, whether for the love of lavender, or for the color and scheme of your garden (or both), you are bound to find a lavender cultivar that will suit your needs.

In her first chapter, Virginia McNaughton lays a great foundation by introducing all the aspects of the “General Cultivation” of lavender. Some of the questions she answers …

• What kind of soil content
• How much water
• How and when to prune (very important to a healthy lavender plant)
• What’s the best fertilizer
• How to transplant
• The importance of weed control
• Harvesting and drying the lavender
• How to plant these wonderful cultivars in your garden

She also spends some time with the “how to’s” of propagating lavender, and dealing with pests and diseases.

Without some knowledge of the makeup of lavender, it would seem pointless to go into a descriptive list of all the cultivars, so Virginia McNaughton dedicates a portion of her book to the “Botany of Lavender.” Measurements, shapes, and colors are given, not just of the lavender plant itself, but also of each part of the plant. The information in this chapter is very informative and well lay out. After a brief history of lavender, the “Classification and Lavender Species” are broken down for you. Considering the scope and size of the genus Lavandula, quite a few pages are devoted to this task.

At last, the stage has been set for a brief description of each and every cultivar listed in this book. Virginia McNaughton divides these into five sections of the different cultivars …

• Lavandula angustifolia
• Lavandula x intermedia
• Lavandula lanata x Lavandula angustifolia
• Lavandula stoechas
• Other Lavenders

The book is appropriately finished with a chapter on the relationship of lavender around the world. How the lavender works into the history and industry of other countries.

You will find spread throughout the pages of this book many, many great pictures of the lavender, helping to convey in their own beautiful descriptive language all the different facets of the lavender and its cultivars.

Stone Mountain

Recently we had the opportunity to go to Stone Mountain State Park in North Carolina.

The leaves were just beginning to change to the colors of autumn, so there were "splashes" of red and gold throughout the trees.

Stone Mountain is just that: A large (huge) granite stone protruding up out of the ground. It is really quite impressive.

At the foot of the mountain you find an old cabin that has been preserved, complete with an old fashioned garden, blacksmith shop, corncrib, and old barn.

It is all most interesting to walk around and see.

There is a parking area up near the cabin for handicap parking; otherwise you are looking at a little walk to get to the cabin area.

While we were wondering around, there were a couple Army Blackhawks doing maneuvers of some sort. We were able to catch a pretty awesome picture of one of the Blackhawks with the mountain ridge in the background. One can only imagine the view they have from the sky!

All in all, Stone Mountain was well worth the visit!

On a recent visit to North Carolina’s Stone Mountain State Park, we were able to enjoy the actual mountain side of the park, and then we went down to the "other side of the road" for an enjoyable picnic down by Stone Mountain Creek.

This was like a whole other section of the park.

The creek was slow and easy going, with little pockets of "fast moving" water.

It was all very picturesque.

We saw someone fishing and it would have seemed to us that there was not enough water to really catch anything in.

However, we were surprised to see for ourselves just what he was fishing for. We could clearly see through the water a couple of brook trout. The larger of the two was about a foot long.

There was a natural trail that the rains caused (where the water flowed off the hill), and as we followed it for a bit, we were rewarded with some great pictures of a group of deer as they foraged for food.

It was really quite an awesome experience.

Later, as we were driving away, there were some more deer by the side of the road, who allowed us to drive by slowly as we took their photos.

We would recommend the Stone Mountain experience to any who are in the area. It is definitely worth the time and effort.

That Last Little Soap Sliver

When you are looking at that last sliver of soap in the soap dish, what do you do?

Well, it would seem that you have two choices (assuming that throwing it away is NOT an option – this soap is much too good for that).

For one, you can just keep using the soap until it disappears. It always amazes me how that the Simple Scents soaps will lather, complete with fragrance, all the way to the end.
The other choice is to take the sliver, and fuse it to a new bar of soap. This always amazes me too. When both bars are wet and lathery, simply press them together and let them dry. No amount of prying will get them apart. It’s as if they become one.

And when you add one flavor to another, so long as the “sliver” will last, you will have an added sensation of combined flavors.

Either way you choose, your soaps will provide you enjoyment until they disappear. And even then, your skin will just keep on enjoying the effect of this wonderful soap.

The Boardwalk

Recently we found an enchanting little treasure right here in Virginia Beach.

Looking at a map, as you are heading down Blackwater Road in the outer reaches of Virginia Beach, eventually you will cross Milldam Creek. Just before you get to the bridge though, you will notice a little “Public Access Boardwalk.” It seems like a small obscure little place where you might have a boat ramp or something of that nature. But it is open to the general public, and it is near the water (right off the Intracoastal Waterway of the North Landing River), and seemed like a great place to see nature with very few other people around.

We were right!

What a wonderful little sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of the big city life, and right here in our own “back yard!”

There is no official parking area though.

It seems that the folks across from the “Boardwalk” have reached a limit with people using their property for that purpose, as they make it very clear for you not to park on their land. We say that to say this, you have park a bit away from the entrance.

But it is worth it.

We had no idea of what lay ahead.

The entrance was overgrown with trees and bushes and such, and once through, you are met with the first actual sign about the boardwalk. This boardwalk has no name, and the sign is purely informational about what you will see along the way. It is neat that the sign was donated by the Boy Scouts.

The boardwalk passes over a small creek and immediately makes a sharp right turn.

Looking ahead, it seems to open up in front of you forever.

And you are only seeing to the first bend. The “boardwalk” was like a very, very long pier, which just kept getting longer and longer.

As we were not expecting any of this, it was quite breathtaking. The whole scene was beautiful.

The boards are weathered, and the boardwalk has suffered from neglect as there is much disrepair along the way, but somehow, this only added to the enchantment of our visit.

We were the only ones there, except for the bees.

These were big fat yellow and black bees, about the size of bumble bees, hovering just above the boardwalk. And they were everywhere. In fact, they were carpenter bees, guarding their nests. Outside of looking very formidable, they did not bother us. Actually made for a few interesting pictures. We found some great information about the bees from the Oklahoma State University if you are interested … Honey Bees, Bumble Bees, Carpenter Bees, and Sweat Bees.

All in all, it was an excellent experience.

The Dryer Sachet

We have just experienced one of life's simple pleasures.

It is sooooo good to open the dryer and be met with the wonderful fresh fragrance of lavender :-).

And of course, the soft lavender scent just seems to follow you, caressing your senses as you fold and put away the laundry.

And all it takes is a simple sachet filled with lavender buds to bring about all this simple pleasure.

We have been doing our laundry with lavender filled sachets for quite some time now, and we wanted to share the experience with you.

A simple muslin sachet(cotton) seems to work the best, as it breaths freely, and you do not have to worry about colors bleeding onto your clothes.

We use a 4x6 sachet, FULL of lavender, and we usually get four or five loads of laundry use out of it, depending on our loads and dryer settings.

We just keep our laundry sachet in the clothes hamper when we are not doing the laundry. It helps a little with the soiled laundry odor :-). Just make sure you don't forget about it and run it through the washer - the lavender buds don't fair so well in there. They will open right up and let all their precious oil out :-(the things we learn sometimes).

As is the general custom with a "spent" lavender dryer sachet, sprinkle the "used" lavender on the carpet before you vacuum, and enjoy it's fragrance one more time as it fills your house.

The Intent of Valentines

The Intent of Valentine’s

With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, many will be facing the same predictable dilemma of "What will I get my Sweetheart this year?"

And with our present economy the way it is, more often than not, the question seems to be, "What CAN I get my Sweetheart this year?"

But whether we are financially secure or not, it quickly becomes apparent, that in order to answer the question, we have to answer some more rudimentary issues.

Such as, "What is at the heart of Valentine’s?"

Or, "What is the purpose of Valentine’s?"

And even more importantly, "What is our intent?"

Do we possibly hold the adolescent view of this special day, being intent solely on "impressing" our Sweetheart?

When we think of Valentine’s, what do we think of?

Let me ask one more question if I may. What seems to be the primary symbol that epitomizes Valentine’s Day?

You are absolutely correct. It is the "heart."

And with good reason, too, for the symbol of the heart has become synonymous with "love."

When you think of Valentine’s Day, many things come to mind, from Cupid to roses. But it is the Valentine’s heart that has captured the "essence" of love.

And of course, not just at Valentine’s either. For in our day to day use, it is with the red heart shape that we express our love for many things. We will commonly insert the heart in a sentence in place of the word "love."

All that being said, Valentine’s is not about the red shape of a heart, any more than Easter is about a rabbit or Christmas about a tree.

No, Valentine’s Day is about what the red heart stands for, and that my friend is Love.

That is all.

Think about it. Love is what makes a Sweetheart a Sweetheart!

So if our intent is to impress our Sweetheart, then it would seem that we have somehow missed what Valentine’s is all about. For as impressive as love may be, love does not seek to be that way.

Love is sharing.

Love is caring.

Love is giving.

And on Valentine’s Day, we want to "show" our Sweetheart that we love them.

For you see, we can offer our Valentine a most expensive, most exquisite gift. Yet without love, that gift has lost something of its value.

But if that same gift, as expensive as it may be, is obtained through much thoughtfulness, and is given as an "expression" of our love, actually sharing our self, then the value of that gift can become priceless.

This is true with any gift, no matter what the price. For what makes the gift priceless is the intent with which it is given.

As always, giving less than we can tends to "cheapen" our love. Lean to more consideration, more time, more thought.

So for this very special Valentine season, why not show your Valentine Sweetheart your love. And not just this Valentine season, but always.

Remember, a truly great Valentine’s gift is given from the heart.

Pop-ups in the internet world are soooooo annoying.

Pop-ups, as we roll our curser down the page, are bad enough, but when the command is to load a pop-up when a website is opened, then the internet security is a welcome thing when it says just above the webpage, "Popup blocked, click here to view."

Not only do we NOT click to view, but more often than not we will click away from the site. Who knows what other surprises they might have for us!

That then gets to the matter of trust.

If we trust the site, then we may click on a word link or picture link to see what they have to offer. But if they are controlling the webpage for us, then we automatically tend not to click on anything.

It all depends. It only takes a split second for them to place an add-on to our computers that can be pretty nasty.

To live in the web world in total paranoia is not good, but we can take reasonable measures to protect our computers (and our personal info). Adjusting our internet security settings to our own comfort levels, purchasing firewalls and other security packages are some of the things we can do.

Some times we get that gut feeling about something or someone in the real world, that something just is not quite right, and the hackles instinctively go up. It's not a bad thing, and can save us a lot of headaches and grief. When we feel that gut feeling in the web world, IF we proceed, then it should be with a measure of caution.

That all being said, have you ever noticed as we go from page to page in some sites (sites that we may trust), or we go from one site to another (again, good trust worthy sites), and we may have a security window come up from time to time that says something to the effect that "there are contents on this webpage that have not been delivered using a secure (HTTPS) connection?

What do we do?

What does it mean?

First of all, we need to remember that not all security windows that come up, are from our system, and may not have our best interest at heart. As we use our systems, we become familiar with our security windows. If it's not something we recognize, be wary!

So, back to the HTTPS issue.

HTTP (the little bit of code we typically find in front of the www.website) stands for Hypertext Transfer Protocol. It is a standard by which data is transferred on the internet. Simply put, this is for "normal" web use.

However, when we are transferring personal information (names, address, credit card, etc), we want to do so in a SECURE fashion.

This information is typically sent through cyberspace in an encrypted format by the use of SSL (Secure Socket Layer).

The entire website does not necessarily need to be encrypted. Only the pages that gather personal information.

The pages that need the extra "security" have the word "Secure" added to the Hypertext Transfer Protocol, making it Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure, which would turn the HTTP in front of the World Wide Website name to HTTPS.

So the https in the following address ... https://www.storesonlinepro.com/store/2782146/login
lets us know that the information to be taken will be secure.

Another indication of the secure in HTTPS will be a padlock in the browser field to the right of the web address (much like the illustration at the top of this blog), and the browser field background will many times be a different color than the standard white background. To the right of the padlock will be the name of the protecting source.

Sometimes though, when we click from a secure webpage page (https) to a regular webpage (http), and there are links coming in or going out of that page (perhaps pictures from another website, or ads from other sources, etc), then our computer security system in effect throws up its hands and says "Hey wait! Everything here may not be good!"

So the question. Do we want to view everything in secure mode (basically disenabling all the outside links to and from that page) or do we trust the site, and would like to view ALL the contents.

This is just a simple explanation, and by no means exhausts the subject, and is subject to change, but it gives us somewhat of an idea of what is going on.

Because our personal information is protected on LittleFrenchBoutique.com, we may encounter security questions when clicking from a secure page (i.e. checkout) back to shopping.

	White Azaleas Virginia is blest with the grace and beauty of azalea flowers in the spring of the year. All year you can see azaleas as hedge and border plants, or simply as big leafy bushes in back yards, filling in and being quite useful at that sort of thing. But in the spring, all these unassuming bushes explode with color. And not just one color either. Many, many colors. It's amazing to see how the countryside can change so. Of course, the dogwoods are blooming, along with a thousand other different flowers, but the azaleas just seem to set the landscape ablaze with beautiful shades of color, from the white pictured here in this blog, to yellow, pink, orange, mauve, violet and so many more. Bringing a goldmine of color and beauty, it's no wonder that the arrival of the azaleas are celebrated the way that they are. Our MerchantCircle.com Page

LittleFrenchBoutique.com has discovered a bit of a gold mine in the web world, too. We have read all some of the negative things posted online by folks about Merchant Circle, but that seems to be with anything. It does take a little bit of effort to have a somewhat decent MC page. We wanted ours to be a "reflection" LittleFrenchBoutique.com. In the end it has developed into another great way for folks to find us. It would seem, that if your business is service orientated, without the need of a platform to sell your products, that you could get away with using only Merchant Circle. We have noticed a few Merchant Circle businesses that had their own websites, found Merchant Circle, and then discovered that their MC page was more effective than their website, only to let their website go. One of the nice things about Merchant Circle is that you can start out with them for free. They do post their Google ads on your page, but that is a small price to pay for what you receive. As time goes on, you may want to purchase one of their packages, but this is not mandatory.

White Rose of Sharon

The rose of sharons are in full bloom when we come out in the morning, and as the sun begins to climb into the sky, gradually heating the air, the rose of sharon flowers wilt away, leaving only a multitude of fresh buds around it to repeat the ceremony the next morning.

Soft white petals with a delicate, almost tissue paper appearance, and a soft creamy yellow stamen in the center.

As a good thing or a bad thing, depending upon your perspective, bees love the thick pollen they find in the rose of sharon flower. Sometimes it seems as though the choices are so many and so good, that the poor bumble bees can't make up their little minds as which flower to work on first :-).

Wild Berries

Wild Berries

Upstate New York has some beautiful countryside.

Full of hills and forests, which in turn are filled with wildlife, wild flowers, and best of all, wild berries.

When you are fortunate enough to come across a raspberry or blackberry patch, it is hard to just stop with the taste of one berry.

Of course, the chokeberries are just beautiful. Aptly named for their EXTRA tart flavor, they can make wonderful jams and jellies, but by the handful they are a bit much :-).

Wisteria

Sporting their dangling cluster of flowers in beautiful shades of lavender, wisteria is a popular ornamental vine.

Anybody who has grown wisteria will tell you that this plant loves to reach out and touch somebody. Somebody, something, anything, and everything it can rap its little tentacles around.

So needless to say, as beautiful as wisteria can be, even though they grow so easily, they require much work and love to keep them "corralled" and under control.

Being a vine, it is possible to create a very beautiful cover with wisteria, both as a backdrop or overhead.

It is hoped that our college bound kids will grab a hold of everything they can get their minds wrapped around, with even more voracity than the wisteria.
